Take Care of an Elephant for a Day

While visiting Thailand, you should take care of an elephant for a day in Chiang Mai. It is located in the north of the country, bordering Myanmar. The weather is slightly cooler and has beautiful jungles where the elephants and hill tribe people live.

We did this at the Elephant Discovery. First, they pick you up at your hotel and take you up into the forest where their elephants are. They have a total of 5 elephants you get to meet. Then they introduce you to your elephant. Ours was named Linda. We fed Linda bundles of mini bananas and sugar cane.

Next, we made Linda her food by smashing together dried red rice, dates, salt, corn, and mini bananas with a mortar and pestle. Then we made the mixture into big balls like granola and laid them in the sun to dry.

Then we got to ride Linda. But our guide explained that we were not going to ride in a basket on her back because they hurt the elephants. We were going to ride directly onto Linda’s back. So, we had to climb onto her head-first. That was quite a challenge. But once we got up there, it was a fantastic experience to ride through the jungle on Linda’s back.

After the long ride, Linda deserved a spa treatment, so she headed right for the lake. But luckily, she dropped us off first before jumping in the lake! We got our bathing suits on and hopped into the lake to bathe her. We used brushes to scrub her prickly skin and rough feet. She enjoyed every minute of it. And so did we. It was tough to say bye to Linda at the end of the day. I highly recommend taking care of one of these magnificent creatures for a day.

What is the Difference Between Thai Food in the U.S. and Thailand?

According to my Thai husband, Thai food in the states is “just too sweet!” And the misconception about Thai food by Americans is that all Thai food is full of peanuts, and it’s more of a one-note spicy, peanut-y flavor. But if you’ve ever been to Thailand, you know that is not the case. Thai…
